We are based on Hawkins Drive in Cambridge, which is the practical reason to call us for a wasp nest here rather than a company dispatching from Toronto or London. Wasps are the one job where response time genuinely matters — a nest by a front door or over a child's play area is not something to book in for next week.

Where wasps nest on Cambridge properties

The housing stock here splits the problem fairly neatly, and where you live tends to predict what you get:

• Older Galt and Preston homes — the century brick and stone houses have gaps at the soffit line, around dormers and behind fascia boards. Yellowjackets get into those voids and nest where you cannot see them. Usually the first sign is steady traffic in and out of one small gap.
• Post-war and mid-century houses — paper wasps under porch roofs, in carport corners and inside unused BBQ covers and patio umbrellas.
• Newer subdivisions — vinyl soffit and rooflines with plenty of small entry points, plus ground-nesting yellowjackets in the open lawns and along fence lines.
• Properties backing onto the Grand or Speed rivers — the treed lots along the rivers see more bald-faced hornets, which build the large grey aerial nests.

Ground nests and the lawnmower problem

Yellowjackets nesting in the ground cause a disproportionate number of the stinging incidents we deal with in Cambridge, because nobody sees them until a mower or a strimmer goes over the entrance. The colony comes out at once and it is a genuinely serious situation, particularly for anyone with a sting allergy.

If you have noticed wasps disappearing into a hole in the lawn, a gap under a patio slab or the base of a shed, mark the spot from a distance and leave it alone. Do not pour anything into it. Ground nests are treated at the entrance, at a time of day when the colony is inside.

Season and timing in Cambridge

Queens start nests here around May. Through June and July the colony is small and treatment is quick. By late August and September a mature yellowjacket nest can hold a few thousand wasps, they become considerably more aggressive, and they start seeking sugar — which is why they turn up around bins, patios and anywhere food is outside.

That late-season shift is why we get most of our Cambridge wasp calls in August. If you can catch it in June, do.

What a Cambridge visit involves

We identify the species first, because paper wasps, yellowjackets and hornets each need a different approach and a different level of caution. We treat at the entry point so returning wasps carry it into the nest. Once the colony is down we remove the nest where it can be safely reached, and deal with the cavity so the same spot is not recolonised — old nests are not reused, but a good site gets found again the following year.
